Cheyenne Tipi Notes: Technical Insights Into 19th Century Plains Indian Bison Hide Tanning is a focused historical monograph exploring a rare and detailed record of Southern Cheyenne women tanning cow hides for a reproduction of a 19th century hide tipi at the Darlington Indian Agency in Oklahoma Territory between April 28 and June 2, 1903.

What makes this account especially significant is that the tipi still exists, preserved in the Field Museum in Chicago more than a century later. Author Jaime Jackson, an experienced tanner, located anthropologist James Mooney’s original notes at the Smithsonian Institution, transcribed them, and then examined the surviving tipi himself. By bringing these sources together, Jackson reconstructs and interprets an ancient craft that was central to Plains Indian culture.

This 2019 edition is a 32-page, perfect bound, full-color book and serves as a companion monograph to Buckskin Tanner. It is well suited for readers interested in Plains Indian material culture, bison hide tanning, ethnography, traditional craft, and historical tanning methods.
